Why visit

The Festival di Sanremo (early February) is a singular cultural event, even if you can't get inside the Ariston theater, the entire city pulses with the festival for a week. Beyond February, Sanremo offers the Casino (one of only four legal in Italy), the medieval La Pigna old town climbing the hillside above the modern resort, the elegant Corso Imperatrice palm promenade, and the surrounding flower-growing valleys. The Hanbury Botanical Gardens just west toward the French border are spectacular. Cycling the converted coastal railway path is exceptional.

When to avoid

Festival week (early February) sees prices triple, hotels book months in advance, and the city is wall-to-wall mobbed. Summer beach crowds peak August. The compact pebble beaches are not the Riviera's best, if pure beach is the goal, head west toward Bordighera or French Riviera coves. Casino requires ID and a dress code. Avoid driving in the historic La Pigna lanes, ZTL restrictions and impossibly narrow streets. Cruise-ship-day crowds can overwhelm the small old town in summer.

About Sanremo

Sanremo, also spelled San Remo in English and formerly in Italian, is a comune (municipality) on the Mediterranean coast of Liguria, in northwestern Italy. Founded in Roman times, it has a population of about 53,000, and is known as a tourist destination on the Italian Riviera. It hosts numerous cultural events, such as the Sanremo Music Festival and the Milan–San Remo cycling classic. Italo Calvino, the most significant figure of 20th century Italian literature, spent his formative years here.
