Why visit
The Cabildo Histórico, where the Constitution was drafted, anchors a colonial center with the Iglesia San Francisco (1680), one of Argentina's oldest churches with a remarkable carved Paraguayan-cedar ceiling. The Costanera waterfront promenade is the social heart, especially at sunset. Santa Fe is famously beer-loving, home to Cervecería Santa Fe brewery (founded 1912) and excellent local craft beer. The Paraná wetlands offer fishing for dorado and surubí, kayaking, and boat trips. Day-trip to Rosario or across the Hernandarias subfluvial tunnel to Paraná city.
When to avoid
Summer (December to February) brings sticky heat and persistent mosquitoes from the wetlands. Dengue circulates. The Paraná floods periodically inundate riverside neighborhoods. Crime has risen with Argentina's economic difficulties, stick to lit central streets at night and avoid showing valuables. Many businesses close early Saturday and all day Sunday outside the Costanera. Avoid the rural roads at night, unmarked obstacles and slow trucks are real hazards. The local water has high mineral content. Some prefer bottled.
