Why visit
Yalong Bay's white sand crescent and Haitang Bay's high-end resort strip define the experience. The Nanshan Buddhism Cultural Zone houses the 108-meter Guanyin of Nanshan, the world's largest Guanyin statue, dramatically perched on a manmade peninsula. Tianya Haijiao ('Edge of Sky, Corner of Sea') offers well known Chinese coastal poetry vistas. The Wuzhizhou Island reef-snorkeling and the Atlantis Sanya waterpark are major draws. Use Sanya as a tropical Chinese beach base or as a duty-free shopping stopover. Flight connections from across China are abundant.
When to avoid
Sanya's Chinese New Year period (late January to February) explodes with domestic tourists, prices triple, and beaches feel like Shanghai subway platforms. Typhoons strike June to October. Coral health has declined despite protections. Check current snorkeling conditions. The downtown old city is gritty rather than compact. Resorts are the appeal, not urban exploration. English signage is moderate at major resorts but limited elsewhere. Hainanese taxi drivers may speak limited Mandarin too. Avoid expecting Western-style food consistently outside resort buffets.
