Why visit
The Yuki Matsuri Snow Festival in early February is the headliner, enormous snow and ice sculptures fill Odori Park, Susukino, and Tsudome over a week. Beyond winter, Sapporo offers superb food: Sapporo ramen (miso-based, born here), Genghis Khan grilled lamb, Hokkaido seafood at Nijo Market, and the original Sapporo Beer Garden. The Sapporo Clock Tower and TV Tower anchor downtown. Day-trip to Otaru's canal town and the ski resorts of Niseko (best powder snow on Earth) and Furano. The Hokkaido University campus is exceptionally pretty in autumn.
When to avoid
Yuki Matsuri week explodes hotel prices and books out months ahead. Winter (December to March) demands serious cold-weather gear. Sidewalks become solid ice and require microspikes. Driving in winter is treacherous unless experienced with snow. Bears occasionally appear in suburban parks. Obey trail warnings. Avoid expecting traditional kyo-Japanese atmosphere, Sapporo is modern, grid-planned, and feels distinct from Honshu cities. Susukino's red-light district has the typical late-night nuisance touts.
