Why visit
The beaches just east of town, Plage de Drewin and Plage Poly, are among Ivory Coast's finest, with white sand and palm groves rarely crowded outside Abidjan weekends. The atmospheric old French quarter on the headland holds the ruins of colonial buildings being slowly reclaimed by vegetation. Sassandra River boat trips reach mangrove channels and small fishing villages. The Pirogue fishing tradition continues. Arrive early morning at the beach to see the colorful boats returning with the catch. Surfing has emerged at nearby breaks. Use as a quiet alternative to busy Grand-Bassam.
When to avoid
Tourist infrastructure is minimal, don't expect resort-style hotels or English-speaking staff. Strong Atlantic rip currents have killed unwary swimmers, stick to lifeguarded sections or surf with locals. Malaria is endemic. Take prophylaxis and mosquito repellent. Road conditions to Sassandra deteriorate in the rainy season. Check before driving. Standard West African urban precautions apply, especially after dark. Avoid ostentatious displays of valuables. Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry to the country.
