Few foreign tourists come specifically. Serra Riccò rewards curious travelers exploring Liguria's Apennine hinterland away from the coastal cliches. The Romanesque parish church of San Bernardo holds modest fresco fragments. Hiking trails through chestnut woods reach Monte Serro and connect to the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri ridge route. Local trattorias serve genuine Ligurian mountain fare, farinata, focaccia di Recco, and chestnut-flour preparations. Use Serra Riccò as a quiet base if Genoa hotel prices push you out, or as a hiking starting point.
When to avoid
Tourist infrastructure is essentially nonexistent, expect no English, very few hotels, and limited restaurants outside the main hamlets. The roads up the Polcevera valley are winding. Carsickness-prone passengers should plan accordingly. The 2018 collapse of Genoa's Morandi Bridge over the Polcevera disrupted access patterns for years. The replacement is now in place. Avoid driving in the narrow village lanes. Park outside and walk. Many trattorias close midday and Sunday evening.
