Why visit
Sétif rewards the curious traveler off Algeria's standard Algiers to Tipaza route. The Roman archaeological site of Djemila, a UNESCO World Heritage hilltop city with striking preserved theatres, temples, and mosaics, is just 50 km north and one of North Africa's finest Roman sites. The Sétif National Museum holds spectacular mosaics from local digs, including the famed 'Triumph of Bacchus.' The city's Parkâtâ Lake and the Ain Fouara fountain are local landmarks. Use Sétif as a base for the Constantine-Sétif-Djemila eastern Algeria circuit.
When to avoid
Algeria requires a tourist visa in advance for most nationalities and an officially registered tour for many travelers, plan ahead. The country carries 'increased caution' advisories from many governments due to terrorism risk in remote regions. Northern cities like Sétif are usually safe but check current advisories. Photographing government, police, or military buildings is prohibited. Modesty is expected, cover shoulders and knees, especially in the medina and at religious sites.
