Why visit
The walled medina is the singular draw, narrow lanes of artisans (still working leather, copper, gold, and textiles), the 9th-century Great Mosque, the Dar Jellouli Museum of Popular Arts in a 17th-century mansion, and the Bab Diwan main gate. The medina works as a living craftsperson's quarter rather than a tourist showroom. Outside the walls, the Kasbah and the Place de la République mark the colonial-era ville nouvelle. The Kerkennah Islands offer slow ferry trips to traditional fishing villages and modest beach getaways. Include Sfax's olive oil and date specialties.
