Why visit
The 5-km Shëngjin Beach is the draw, wide, sandy, and shallow-water-friendly for families. The Rana e Hedhun (Thrown Sand) sand dune just north is a striking dune formation popular with Instagram tourists. Day-trips reach Lezhë's Skanderbeg Memorial (Albanian national hero), the Venetian Tower of Shëngjin, and the Kune-Vain-Tale lagoon nature reserve excellent for birdwatching. Use Shëngjin as a less-crowded alternative to Durrës or as a Northern Albania beach base, prices are notably lower than Greece or Croatia.
When to avoid
Tourist infrastructure has expanded faster than quality, hotel standards vary wildly. Check reviews carefully. The beach gets crowded in peak Albanian summer (July to August), particularly weekends with families from Tirana. Some sections still have remnant Communist-era industrial scarring. The water can have agricultural runoff after heavy rain from the Drin River. Check beach flag conditions. Off-season (October to April) most hotels and restaurants close. Avoid driving the unsignposted rural roads at night. Pothole repair is uneven.
