Why visit
The Mukden Palace is the obvious draw, a smaller but architecturally fascinating predecessor to the Forbidden City, blending Manchu, Mongol, and Chinese styles. The Fuling Tomb (East Tomb) and Zhaoling Tomb (North Tomb) hold the founding Qing emperors. The 9.18 Historical Museum commemorates the Mukden Incident that started the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931, a politically charged but powerful site. Old Liaoning industrial heritage is visible at the Tiexi industrial museum. Northeastern cuisine, jiaozi, guo bao rou, dongbei stews, is hearty and excellent.
When to avoid
Shenyang's air pollution can be severe, especially during winter coal-heating season, check AQI before serious outdoor activity. Winter is brutally cold, often below -20°C with windchill. The Great Firewall blocks Western services. Plan with VPNs and downloadable maps. Cash is increasingly obsolete. Visitors need WeChat Pay or Alipay linked to international cards. English is rare outside major hotels. Don't expect Shanghai-style cosmopolitanism. Some industrial neighborhoods feel rough. Standard urban precautions apply.
