Why visit
The Huaqiangbei electronics market is a global pilgrimage for makers, multi-block towers selling components, prototypes, drones, and gadgets. The OCT-LOFT creative quarter in Nanshan houses galleries, indie cafes, and design studios in repurposed factory buildings. Window of the World theme park has Vegas-style miniatures of global landmarks. Dafen Village is China's reproduction-painting capital. The food scene is exceptional, Shenzhen drew chefs from across China, plus genuine Cantonese dim sum, Chaozhou seafood, and a craft-coffee scene rivaling Shanghai's. Most foreign visitors transit through to Hong Kong. Treat Shenzhen as a layover or tech-pilgrimage destination.
When to avoid
Summer humidity is brutal and typhoon season runs May to October. The Great Firewall blocks Western services. Plan with VPNs and downloadable maps. Cash is essentially obsolete. Visitors need WeChat Pay or Alipay linked to international cards. Counterfeit goods are widespread at electronics markets, know what you're buying. The city's instant-urban character means it lacks neighborhood character of older Chinese cities. Border crossings to Hong Kong can have serious queues. Allow time. English is moderate in Nanshan and tech sectors but limited elsewhere.
