Why visit
The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Sherbrooke holds an excellent regional collection. Murals throughout the downtown make Sherbrooke a notable street-art city. Bishop's University in nearby Lennoxville, with its visually coherent chapel and English-style green, feels like a slice of New England. The Mont-Bellevue ski hill sits within city limits. Surrounding Estrie offers wineries (Vignoble de l'Orpailleur, Vignoble du Domaine Bresee), maple-syrup cabanes à sucre in spring, and Mont-Orford National Park hiking. Use Sherbrooke as a francophone alternative base for the townships.
When to avoid
Winter (December to March) is brutally cold (often below -25°C with windchill). Roads can be hazardous. Sherbrooke sits in a snow-belt that gets serious accumulations. Don't expect English-language services everywhere despite the heritage, the city is firmly francophone and signage is French. Fall foliage season (late September to early October) packs hotels and lodge restaurants in surrounding Estrie. Spring 'mud season' (April) is grim. Mosquitoes and blackflies in early summer at outlying lakes can be vicious.
