Why visit
Karato Market is the singular reason, a working fish market where you can buy nigiri-style fugu, sea bream, and other Inland Sea seafood directly from morning vendors and eat dockside. The Akama Shrine commemorates the child Emperor Antoku who drowned at Dan-no-ura. The Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel walks under the strait to Kyushu, a strange thrill. Climb Hino-yama for the famous strait view. Murasaki Shikibu's tomb is here. Use Shimonoseki as a Honshu-Kyushu transition point or as a fugu pilgrimage. The night ferry to Busan, Korea departs from here.
When to avoid
Fugu must be prepared by licensed chefs, never eat it from unlicensed sources. Summer humidity is brutal. Midday outdoor activity drains. Typhoons hit hard August to October. The city has shrunk substantially from its peak. Some districts feel emptied out. English signage is moderate at the market and major sites but limited elsewhere. Avoid driving in the narrow port-area streets. Use the bus or walk. The Shimonoseki-Busan ferry requires advance Korean visa planning for some nationalities.
