Why visit
Persepolis (Takht-e Jamshid), the immense stone ruins of Darius and Xerxes's ceremonial capital, with its Apadana audience hall reliefs, is one of the great archaeological sites on Earth. In Shiraz itself, the dawn-pink Nasir-ol-Molk 'Pink Mosque' explodes with stained-glass light, the Tomb of Hafez draws daily Iranian pilgrims who recite his poetry, the Vakil Bazaar and Bath are exquisite 18th-century examples of Zand architecture, and Eram Garden is a Persian paradise. Add Saadi's tomb, the Bagh-e Eram, and Pasargadae (Cyrus the Great's tomb) for a complete Fars circuit.
When to avoid
Iran's geopolitical tensions affect Western visitor access, check current diplomatic and travel-advisory situations carefully. Independent visa regimes for Americans, British, and Canadians require booked guided tours. Strict dress codes apply for all women: hijab, long sleeves, loose-fitting clothes. Photography of military or government sites is forbidden. Credit cards from international banks don't work. Bring sufficient USD or EUR cash. Solo female travelers can have positive experiences but verify current situation. Friday prayers slow business midday.
