Why visit
The 13th-century Crusader Sea Castle (Qalaat al-Bahr) stands dramatically on a stone causeway in the harbor. The walled Old Sidon souks remain one of Lebanon's most authentic traditional markets, a labyrinth of vaulted lanes selling sweets, spices, and the city's famous oranges. The Khan al-Franj caravanserai (1610) is gorgeously restored. The Soap Museum honors the centuries-old olive-oil soap industry. Local cuisine specializes in fish from the harbor and the famous senioura sweet biscuits. Day-trip to the Phoenician temple ruins at Echmoun and to Tyre and Byblos.

Lebanon faces serious ongoing political and economic crises plus periodic conflict with Israel, check current government travel advisories carefully. Conditions can change rapidly. Southern Lebanon (the area around Sidon and southward to Tyre) sees periodic Israeli strikes and Hezbollah activity. Cash is essential. Banks function poorly. Power cuts are routine. Conservative dress is appreciated though not strict. Avoid politically sensitive conversations and any photography of military installations. Standard Middle Eastern urban precautions apply. Travel insurance with conflict coverage is essential.
