Why visit
Smederevo Fortress is the singular reason, the immense waterside walls, the inner Small Town with the despot's residence, and the riverside grounds make for a striking visit. The Smederevo Museum displays medieval artifacts. The September Smederevska Jesen (Smederevo Autumn) wine festival celebrates the region's grape harvest and the local traditional Smederevka white wine variety. The waterfront promenade along the Danube is pleasant for walks. Use Smederevo as an easy day-trip from Belgrade or as a stop on a Danube driving route through Serbia.
When to avoid
The 1941 Smederevo explosion (when Nazi-occupied munitions stored in the fortress accidentally detonated) destroyed much of the inner town and damaged the fortress walls visible today, some sections remain in poor condition. Mind footing on uneven ground. The Smederevo steel mill produces visible air pollution near its operations. The fortress sits on the opposite side of the city. Tourist services are limited. English moderate at the fortress but rare elsewhere. The Danube can flood low areas after heavy rain. Avoid wandering off marked fortress paths.
