Why visit

Sorrento is the most practical base for the Amalfi Coast, ferries to Capri leave from its little Marina Piccola, the Circumvesuviana train rolls into Pompeii in 30 minutes, and SITA buses crawl the cliff road to Positano and Amalfi. The old town's tangle of lanes hides ceramic shops, gelaterias, and Piazza Tasso, the buzzing main square. Include the Cloister of San Francesco, the Correale museum, and a sunset Aperol on a cliff terrace at Villa Comunale. Try the lemon-soaked delizia al limone and any seafood pasta with the local Gragnano pasta.

When to avoid

Peak summer (July to August) brings cruise crowds, brutal traffic on the Amalfi road, and inflated prices, shoulder season (May or late September) is far better. Don't drive into the old town, ZTL fines are steep. The 'beaches' are rocky platforms and concrete piers, not sand, Positano or Capri are better for swimming. Watch for taxi overcharging at the port.
