Why visit
Sousse has genuine North African history with beach-resort convenience. The medina's whitewashed walls, Great Mosque, and rooftop ribat views are highlights, and the Sousse Archaeological Museum holds one of the world's finest Roman mosaic collections. Day trips reach the Roman amphitheatre of El Jem (one of the largest in the world), the holy city of Kairouan, and the desert oasis of Tozeur. The Port El Kantaoui marina offers calmer beaches and watersports for families.
When to avoid
Tunisia carries a 'exercise increased caution' advisory from many governments, particularly border regions, and Sousse itself was the site of the 2015 Port El Kantaoui attack. Security at major resorts and tourist sites has since been heavily reinforced. Check current advisories before booking. Avoid demonstrations and stay aware in market crowds. July to August heat tops 35°C with peak crowds. June and September are far better. Dress modestly outside resort zones, cover shoulders and knees in the medina.
