Why visit
Srivijayapuram is the jumping-off point for some of Asia's clearest waters and most untouched coral. The Cellular Jail National Memorial, with its austere evening sound-and-light show, is essential for understanding India's independence struggle. Ferries fan out to Havelock (now Swaraj Dweep) for Radhanagar Beach, repeatedly ranked among Asia's best, and Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep) for snorkelling. Ross Island's overgrown British ruins, Chidiya Tapu sunsets, and the Anthropological Museum round out the town itself.
When to avoid
Foreign visitors need a Restricted Area Permit (issued on arrival but check current rules). Some islands remain entirely off-limits, especially Sentinelese and other tribal areas, do NOT attempt to approach. Monsoon season (May to September) brings rough seas and frequent ferry cancellations. Cyclones occasionally close the islands entirely. Tap water is unsafe, stick to bottled. ATMs are unreliable, carry cash from the mainland.
