Why visit
Stockholm rewards walkers and water-lovers in equal measure. Wander Gamla Stan's ochre alleyways to the Royal Palace and Storkyrkan cathedral, then ferry to Djurgården island for the austere Vasa Museum (a 17th-century warship raised intact from the harbour), the open-air Skansen, and ABBA the Museum. The Fotografiska photography museum and Moderna Museet anchor a serious art scene. Include a sauna-and-cold-plunge ritual, a fika (coffee with cinnamon bun), and an archipelago boat trip to Vaxholm or Sandhamn. Try köttbullar (meatballs), gravlax, and toast skagen.
When to avoid
Stockholm is famously expensive, a casual dinner runs 30+ EUR, alcohol prices are punishing. Sundays bring partial closures of museums and shops. Check hours. Winter daylight shrinks below 7 hours and many tourist boats stop running. Pickpockets work the T-bana metro and tourist queues at Drottninggatan. Standard urban awareness suffices. Cash is essentially extinct, carry a contactless card and ensure it works abroad.
