Why visit
Sylhet pairs spiritual heritage with some of Bangladesh's loveliest landscapes. The Hazrat Shah Jalal Dargah pilgrimage shrine, with its sacred koi fish pond, is the cultural heart of the city. Day trips reach the tea-garden hills of Srimangal (the 'tea capital'), the surreal Ratargul swamp forest by canoe, the cliffs and waterfalls at Bichanakandi and Jaflong (against a Meghalaya mountain backdrop), and the haor wetlands at Tanguar. Sylhet's seven-layer tea, a Srimangal specialty, is a regional curiosity worth seeking out. Try Sylheti shatkora-flavoured beef curry and pitha rice cakes.
When to avoid
Bangladesh has periodic political unrest, check current advisories before travel and avoid demonstrations. The monsoon (May to Sept) brings flooding that can isolate the haor and tea regions. Roads to Jaflong wash out. Tap water is unsafe, stick to bottled. Modesty is expected at religious sites, cover hair and limbs at the Shah Jalal shrine, and remove shoes. Mosquitoes and dengue are practical risks. Use repellent. Female travelers should dress conservatively and may attract significant attention.
