The Salt City. | The home of the Orange.
Syracuse is a winter-sports and college-town destination first, catching an Orange basketball game at the JMA Dome under its famous orange roof is a quintessential central New York experience. The Erie Canal Museum and the Salt Museum trace the local industrial heritage, and the Everson Museum of Art holds a strong American art collection. The Great New York State Fair (late August to Labor Day) is one of the country's largest. Use Syracuse as a base for the Finger Lakes wine region (an hour south), Niagara Falls (3 hours west), and the Adirondack Mountains (1.5 hours northeast).
Syracuse is the snowiest large city in the contiguous US, lake-effect storms can drop a meter overnight. If you must drive in winter, check road conditions and pack supplies. Some downtown blocks remain economically distressed. Stick to the University Hill, Armory Square, and downtown core after dark. Summer humidity around the lake breeds mosquitoes. Bring repellent. The smaller airport (SYR) has limited direct connections, a Buffalo or Rochester flight may be cheaper.
