Why visit
The National Taichung Theater, Toyo Ito's curving concrete masterpiece, is a draw for architecture lovers, alongside the National Museum of Natural Science. Wander the Rainbow Village (every wall hand-painted by a 90-something veteran), the lantern-lit Miyahara dessert hall, and Fengjia Night Market for some of Taiwan's best street food: pearl milk tea, sun cakes, and oyster omelets. Day-trip to Sun Moon Lake or hike the Dakeng trails. Spring brings the explosive Mazu Pilgrimage, a nine-day procession that draws millions.
When to avoid
Summer (June to September) is hot and sticky, highs near 33°C, oppressive humidity, and typhoon risk between July and October that can shut down transport. Air quality dips badly in winter when northeast monsoon traps haze over the city. Sensitive travelers should pack masks. Traffic is dense and scooter-heavy, cross streets cautiously. Avoid relying on tap water. Bottled or boiled is the norm.
