Why visit
Takayama is a mountain Japan base for old merchant streets, morning markets, sake, carpentry, festivals, and routes toward Shirakawa-go. It works when the trip wants rural craft and alpine pacing after bigger cities.
When to avoid
Festival weeks (April 14 to 15 and October 9 to 10) book out a year in advance and prices triple, plan early or skip those dates. Winter is really deep (lows near -9°C, heavy snow) and mountain roads can close. Many small ryokan and shops are cash-only and close on Wednesdays. The town is small, two days is plenty unless you're using it as an Alps base.
