Why visit
Târgoviște's Princely Court complex (Curtea Domnească) and Chindia Tower are the most direct historical link to the real Vlad the Impaler, climb the tower for sweeping views and Vlad-themed exhibits. The Princely Church, the medieval Stelea Monastery, and the Mitropoliei Cathedral round out the religious heritage. The Ceaușescu execution site at the former military barracks is open as a memorial museum, a sobering visit. Day-trip to Bran Castle (the so-called 'Dracula's Castle'), the Bucegi mountains, and the Peleş Castle. Sample sarmale, mici, and țuică plum brandy.
When to avoid
Winters are cold and grey (lows near -5°C). The Romanian winter ţuică culture means restaurants close earlier in low season. Petty pickpockets occasionally work the train station. Driving in the historic center is restricted. Park outside and walk. Some museums close on Mondays and Tuesdays. Smoking is heavy despite indoor bans. ATMs and cards work well but cash (lei) helps at small shops.
