La ciudad de la plata | The silver city
Taxco is silver shopping nirvana, the Saturday tianguis silver market draws buyers from around the world, and dozens of family workshops open doors to visitors. The Santa Prisca twin towers loom over the central zócalo, and the Casa Humboldt and Spratling Museum trace the colonial-era and 20th-century silver revivals. Ride a white VW beetle taxi through the streets (the only car narrow enough), take the cable car up to the Monte Taxco hotel for sunset views, and visit the Cacahuamilpa caves nearby. Holy Week processions are intense and beautiful.
Guerrero state has serious cartel-related violence, particularly outside Taxco itself, most governments issue elevated travel advisories for the state and recommend flying in or coming on tour. Avoid intercity drives after dark and stick to the toll road from Mexico City. The town's steep terrain is brutal on knees, wear good shoes. Holy Week sees prices triple and accommodations book out months ahead.
