Why visit
Teggiano rewards travelers who like off-the-beaten-path Italy. The Castello Macchiaroli still stands at the high point of town, the Diocesan Museum holds religious art and rare manuscripts, and August's Alla Tavola della Principessa Costanza festival recreates a 1480 Renaissance wedding feast in full costume, hundreds of locals stage banquets, processions, and tournaments. The surrounding Cilento National Park (UNESCO) offers pristine hiking, and you're an easy drive from Paestum's Greek temples and the Amalfi Coast.
When to avoid
Public transport into Teggiano is sparse, a rental car is essential. The town's narrow medieval lanes are not accessible-friendly, with steep cobbles and stairs throughout. Most shops close for siesta (1 to 4 pm). English is rare outside the festival. Basic Italian helps enormously. Restaurants close early in winter and have limited weekday menus.
