Why visit
The colonial heart around Parque Central, the twin-towered Cathedral of San Miguel Arcángel, and the National Identity Museum (MIN) tell the story of pre-Columbian and colonial Honduras. The Picacho mountain park looks down on the city from a giant Christ statue. Day-trip to Valle de Ángeles and Santa Lucía (compact pine-forest mountain villages) for handicrafts and hot-stone-grilled tacos. La Tigra National Park, a cloud forest 22 km from the city, offers excellent birding and hiking. Try baleadas (folded tortillas with beans) and plato típico.
When to avoid
Honduras has serious gang and crime issues, the US, UK, and Canada all maintain elevated travel advisories for Tegucigalpa specifically. Avoid walking after dark, don't use public buses (taxi only, ideally Uber), and steer clear of neighborhoods like Comayagüela's outer barrios. Don't display valuables, expensive phones, or jewelry. The city's altitude makes the sun fierce. Hydrate. Driving is chaotic, hire a driver if you can.
