Why visit
Tela's beaches, long stretches of golden sand fringed by coconut palms, are some of the best on Honduras's Caribbean coast and far less developed than Roatán. Visit nearby Garifuna villages like Triunfo de la Cruz and Miami for traditional drumming, punta dancing, and machuca (mashed plantain with seafood soup). The Lancetilla Botanical Garden (the largest in Latin America) showcases tropical biodiversity, and the Punta Sal National Park offers boat trips to white-sand beaches and snorkeling. Pico Bonito National Park is an easy day-trip.
When to avoid
Honduras carries serious safety advisories from most Western governments due to gang violence and crime, check current guidance. Tela itself is calmer than San Pedro Sula or Tegucigalpa but petty theft happens. Don't flash valuables and avoid empty beach stretches after dark. Mosquitoes carry dengue, chikungunya, and zika, use strong repellent. Tap water is unsafe. Stick to bottled. The road from San Pedro Sula is best traveled by day. Hurricane season (June to November) can disrupt travel.
