Why visit
Visit Tema when you want to understand Ghana through port infrastructure, planned urban growth, fishing work, and the Atlantic edge rather than through Accra alone. The fishing harbour bustles with brightly painted wooden canoes returning at dawn. Greenwich Meridian markers in the Community 11 area let you straddle 0° longitude. Day-trip from Accra for fresh seafood at the harbour-side stalls, or use Tema as a base for visiting the slave-trade-era forts at Ada Foah and the Volta River estuary.
When to avoid
Tema's industrial nature means heavy truck traffic and limited tourism infrastructure, most visitors stay in Accra. Avoid walking after dark and use registered taxis or Bolt. Don't photograph the port, military, or industrial installations. Malaria is a year-round risk, take prophylaxis and use repellent. Tap water is unsafe. Stick to bottled. The harmattan dust haze (December to February) can affect breathing.
