Why visit
Teramo's compact center is dotted with archaeological surprises: the partially excavated Roman amphitheater and theater, the 12th-century cathedral with a striking Baroque silver altar, and the Sant'Anna church complex. The town is the gateway to the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, hiking to Corno Grande, Italy's tallest Apennine peak (2,912 m). Local cuisine is rich and rustic: virtù (Teramo's spring 'seven-grain' soup), maccheroni alla chitarra, and torrone soffice. Easy day-trips to medieval Atri and the Adriatic beaches.
When to avoid
Teramo lies in a seismically active zone, the 2009 L'Aquila and 2016 central Italy earthquakes affected the area. Some buildings remain under restoration. Public transport between villages is sparse. A rental car is essential for the mountains. Many shops close midday for siesta and on Sundays. Winter mountain roads can close suddenly with snow. English is limited outside main hotels.
