Terracina balances Roman ruins, medieval streets, and a long sandy beach. Climb to the Temple of Jupiter Anxur for one of the best coastal views in central Italy, walk through Piazza del Municipio where Roman pavement is still visible, and visit the cathedral built atop a Roman temple. The new town below offers a wide blue-flag beach with shallow water useful for families. Day-trip to the Pontine Islands (Ponza by ferry), the Sperlonga grottos, and the Circeo National Park. Eat tielle (squid pies) and fresh anchovies.
August is mobbed with Italian visitors, prices spike and beach loungers run out. The old town's narrow lanes are tough on knees and impossible for prams. Public transport between Rome and Terracina is slow. Trains take 90 min and buses are basic. The Temple of Jupiter requires a steep climb, not for those with mobility issues. English is patchy outside hotels.
