Why visit
The waterfront promenade past the well known White Tower is the city's heart, walk it at sunset for free music, sea breeze, and the Umbrellas sculpture. Byzantine treasures abound: Hagia Sophia, the Rotunda, Agios Demetrios, Hagia Sophia. The Archaeological Museum holds Macedonian gold treasures, and the Museum of Byzantine Culture is one of Europe's best. Eat your way through the Modiano and Kapani markets (bougatsa for breakfast, gyros pita anywhere, mussels saganaki at Tsiknas). Climb to the Ano Poli (upper town) for Ottoman alleys and views.
When to avoid
August is hot and many locals leave for the islands, service can be patchy and central streets feel emptied. Petty theft happens at the train station and on busy bus routes. Stay alert. Smoking remains heavy despite indoor bans. Driving in the center is congested and parking impossible, use buses or taxis. Some Byzantine churches have very limited opening hours (often morning only).
