九国租界之都 | The city of nine foreign concessions
Why visit
Tianjin's foreign-concession districts are the city's signature, the Wudadao (Five Great Avenues) area features over 2,000 European-style villas, best explored by carriage or bike. The Italian-style Town and the riverside Tianjin Eye Ferris wheel mounted on a bridge are striking. Eat goubuli baozi (steamed pork buns), jianbing (savory crepes), and Tianjin-style mahua (twisted fried dough). The Tianjin Binhai Library's wave-form interior is Instagram-famous. The city makes a worthwhile day-trip from Beijing via 30-minute high-speed rail.
When to avoid
Air pollution is a recurring problem, check AQI before outdoor activity, especially in winter. Summer is very hot and humid. Winter is bitterly cold (lows near -5°C). Tap water needs boiling. Visa-free transit is increasingly available but check current rules, China's policies have changed rapidly. Internet censorship blocks Western platforms. Install a VPN before arriving. Don't photograph government buildings or military installations.
