Why visit
The Sea of Galilee defines the visit, walk the boardwalk promenade, take a wooden boat replica out to the Capernaum sites, swim from town beaches, or rent a kayak. Pilgrimage destinations cluster around the lake: Capernaum (Jesus's adopted hometown), the Mount of Beatitudes, and the Tabgha loaves-and-fishes church. Within Tiberias itself visit the Tomb of Maimonides, the historic Hamat Tiberias hot springs, and the ancient synagogue mosaics. Sample St. Peter's fish (musht) at lakefront restaurants and try Galilean wines.
When to avoid
Israel-Palestine conflict carries security risk, check current government advisories. Northern Israel can be impacted by tensions with Lebanon and Syria. Rocket alerts have reached Tiberias periodically. Saturday (Shabbat, Friday sundown to Saturday sundown) shuts most transport and many businesses. Summer is very hot, the lake's altitude amplifies temperatures. Sunscreen is essential year-round. Hydrate constantly.
