Why visit
Tijuana's food scene rivals Mexico City, the original Caesar salad was invented here at Caesar's, and the city pioneered the Baja Med fusion movement (chef Javier Plascencia at Misión 19, Animalon). Eat your way through the Mercado Hidalgo, taquerias along Calle Sexta, and the dozens of craft breweries (Insurgente, Border Psycho). Avenida Revolución's old downtown is making a comeback, Pasaje Rodríguez and the CECUT cultural center anchor a serious art scene. Day-trip to the wineries of Valle de Guadalupe, an hour south.
When to avoid
Tijuana has elevated travel advisories from the US, UK, and Canada due to cartel violence, most incidents are between criminal groups but spillover is real. Stick to known neighborhoods (Zona Río, downtown, Playas de Tijuana), use Uber rather than street taxis, avoid travel after dark, and don't engage with anyone offering drugs or sex work. Border wait times can be brutal, use SENTRI/Ready Lane or cross during off-peak hours. Don't drink tap water.
