Why visit
Timbuktu's three great mosques, Djingareyber, Sankoré, and Sidi Yahya, are the architectural masterpieces of West African Sudanic style, sculpted from earth and palm timber. The private libraries hold tens of thousands of medieval Arabic manuscripts (many of which survived 2012's jihadist destruction by being secreted away to Bamako). Visit the camel market, the Tuareg craftsmen's quarters, and the surrounding Saharan dunes. The city remains a living symbol, a metaphor for the unreachable end of the earth in many languages.
When to avoid
Timbuktu sits in an active conflict zone, most Western governments issue 'Do Not Travel' advisories for northern Mali due to jihadist activity (al-Qaeda affiliates and ISIS), kidnapping risk, and political instability. Foreign visitors have been kidnapped and killed. Tourism has all but collapsed since 2012. If you're determined to go, hire trusted local guides and consult security experts. Most insurance won't cover you. Heat is extreme. Sandstorms common. This is included for context, not active recommendation.
