Orașul florilor și al revoluției | The city of flowers and revolution
Three magnificent squares anchor the old town, Piața Victoriei (Victory Square), Piața Unirii (Union Square, with its rare Baroque ensemble), and Piața Libertății. The Orthodox Cathedral with its elaborate Byzantine-influenced spires towers over the city. The Memorial of the 1989 Revolution and the Communist Consumer's Museum tell the recent history. The Bega River canal walkway is delightful for cycling. Eat papanasi (sweet cheese doughnuts), Banat-style sarmale, and Hungarian-influenced gulyas. Day-trip to the wineries of Recas.
Winter (December to February) is cold and damp, highs near 4°C with grey skies and occasional snow. Summer can hit 35°C with thunderstorms. Petty pickpockets work the train station and crowded squares. Some restaurants close for ferie (vacation) in August. ATMs and cards work well but cash (lei) helps at small shops. Smoking is heavy despite indoor bans.
