Tlemcen offers Algeria's finest concentration of Almoravid and Zayyanid Islamic architecture, the Grand Mosque with its Almoravid dome and minaret, the Mansoura Mosque ruins (a Marinid encampment), and the breathtaking Sidi Boumediene mosque-mausoleum complex. The El Mechouar palace and the Belle Époque colonial center add layers. Day-trip to the Caves of Beni Add and the El Ourit waterfalls. Sample couscous Tlemcénien, mloukhia, and pastries laden with honey and almond. The Andalusian music tradition (gharnati) is preserved here.

When to avoid

Algeria requires a visa for most nationalities and the application process is slow, plan months ahead. Solo women travelers face attention. Conservative dress essential. About Tlemcen

Tlemcen is the second-largest city in northwestern Algeria after Oran and the capital of Tlemcen Province. The city has developed leather, carpet, and textile industries, which it exports through the port of Rachgoun. It had a population of 140,158, as of the 2008 census.
