Why visit
The Cosmovitral, a former Art Nouveau market hall transformed in the 1980s into a stained-glass cathedral over a botanical garden, is memorable. Climb (or drive) the Nevado de Toluca volcano (4,690 m) for sweeping crater-lake views. One of Mexico's most accessible high-altitude experiences. The Friday tianguis is one of Mexico's largest open-air markets. Sample chorizo verde and rojo (Toluca's signature spiced sausages), tacos de placero, and moscos liqueurs. Day-trip to the striking mountain town of Valle de Bravo.
When to avoid
The 2,667m altitude affects most visitors, plan for slow exertion the first day or two. Winters are sharply cold (lows near 2°C with frost) and the volcano summit is really alpine. Air pollution is a concern in the valley basin. Mexico State has elevated US travel advisory due to crime. Stick to the centro and main thoroughfares, use Uber rather than street taxis, and avoid intercity travel after dark. Don't drink tap water.
