Sotto le mura scaligere | Beneath the Scaliger walls
Why visit
Climb the Scaliger Castle for sweeping lake views and visit its small Museum of Lake Fisheries, which preserves the town's centuries-old fishing tradition. The lakefront promenade lined with palm trees and pastel houses leads to small pebble beaches. Take the car ferry across to Toscolano-Maderno on the western shore. Hike up Monte Baldo (the cable car is in nearby Malcesine) for alpine views, or explore the medieval lanes for olive oil shops and trattorias. Sample lake-fish risotto, bigoli with sardines, and Bardolino wine from local vineyards.
When to avoid
July to August brings serious German and Austrian tourist crowds. Book accommodations months ahead and expect inflated prices. Lake bora winds can whip up suddenly, small boats need caution. The medieval lanes are stepped and tough on prams or wheelchairs. Most shops close for siesta (1 to 4 pm). Restaurants close earlier in winter and many shut entirely from November to March. ATMs work but cash is preferred at small bars.
