Why visit
Trani Cathedral is the obvious draw, a soaring rose-pink-and-white Romanesque masterpiece with bronze doors and a spectacular crypt, with the sea lapping its foundations. Walk the harbor at golden hour when fishermen mend nets beside the medieval Castello Svevo built by Frederick II. The Jewish quarter (Giudecca) preserves three medieval synagogue-converted churches reflecting Trani's important medieval Jewish community. Eat raw seafood (frutti di mare) straight off the boat and Apulian orecchiette. Easy day-trip to the trulli of Alberobello and the white town of Polignano.
When to avoid
Summer (July to August) brings Italian holiday crowds and heat above 32°C. Book ahead. Driving in the historic center is restricted. Park outside and walk. Most shops close for siesta (1 to 4 pm) and Sundays. Some restaurants close in winter low season. Public transport between Apulian towns is improving but a rental car gives much more flexibility. Pickpockets occasionally work the harbor crowds. Standard precautions apply.
