Zwischen Rhein, Sieg und Wahner Heide | Between the Rhine, the Sieg and the Wahner Heath
Schloss Wissem hosts the Burg Wissem Bilderbuchmuseum (Picture Book Museum), a delightful collection of children's book art from around the world. The town makes a quiet, affordable base for exploring Bonn (15 min by tram) and Cologne (30 min by train). The Wahner Heide, a vast heather and birch heathland just outside town, is a popular hiking and nature reserve. The annual Troisdorfer Schinkenmarkt (autumn ham market) is a regional foodie event. Easy access to Cologne/Bonn airport.
Troisdorf is functional rather than visually coherent, you wouldn't make a special trip. Most attractions are spread out. A car or bike helps. Sundays bring closed shops (Ruhetag culture). Restaurants close early in winter (kitchens often shut by 9 pm). Some neighborhoods near the train station feel rough at night. Standard precautions apply. The Wahner Heide has unexploded WWII ordnance in some marked areas, stick to trails.
