Why visit
Nidaros Cathedral, a soaring Gothic masterpiece built over the burial site of Saint Olav, Norway's patron saint, is the unmissable centerpiece. Cross the wooden Old Town Bridge for the famous-perfect view of multicolored riverside warehouses (Bryggen i Trondheim). Visit the Ringve Music Museum and the Rockheim popular-music museum. The Trondheim Pilgrim Trail (Olav's Way) ends here. The Bakklandet neighborhood is a compact web of cobbled lanes, bohemian cafes, and craft shops. Try lutefisk, fenalår (cured leg of mutton), and aquavit.
When to avoid
Winters are dark and cold, by December the sun barely rises above the horizon for a few hours. Driving in winter requires studded tires. Black ice on sidewalks is real. Norway is famously expensive, a beer can be 12€, a meal 30€+. Many shops close Sundays. Pickpockets occasionally work the train station. Most museums close on Mondays. Plan to walk or cycle, driving in the center is restricted.
