Why visit
Chan Chan's vast adobe complexes, carved with marine iconography, are otherworldly. The smaller Tschudi Palace is the public-access section. The Moche-built Huacas del Sol y de la Luna pyramids, with striking polychromatic murals, predate the Inca by over a thousand years. Surf the legendary left point of Chicama (the world's longest left wave) just up the coast. Trujillo's center: the cathedral, Casa Urquiaga (Bolívar's house), and the elegant pastel mansions. Eat ceviche and shambar soup. This is the heartland of Peruvian marinera dance.
When to avoid
Trujillo has had elevated street crime including express kidnapping (cheap-taxi snatch). Use only authorized taxis or InDriver/Uber, never hail off the street. The El Porvenir neighborhood and outskirts after dark should be avoided. Don't drink tap water. Heavy rain from El Niño events occasionally floods the city and damages adobe sites, check conditions. Surf at Chicama only with experienced guides. Rip currents are serious.
