Why visit
Tutin is the gateway to the dramatic Pešter plateau, a vast high-altitude karst landscape with traditional pastoralism, rare wildflowers, and some of Serbia's darkest night skies. Hike to the Sopoćani Monastery (UNESCO, 30 minutes away), one of medieval Serbia's masterpieces with extraordinary 13th-century frescoes. The Vučak vista point and the surrounding mountains offer hiking and birdwatching. Sample traditional Sandžak cuisine: pita with various fillings, lamb under the saa, and Bosnian-style coffee. Visit during the Pešter sheep cheese festival.
When to avoid
Tutin is small and quiet, don't expect tourist infrastructure or English speakers. Winters are harsh and brutal: the Pešter plateau regularly sees -25°C and heavy snow that can isolate the town. Public transport is sparse. A rental car is essential. Border-region status means occasional checkpoint controls. Carry passport. Most shops are cash-only. Modest dress in mosques and rural villages is appreciated.
