Why visit
The Pannonian Lakes complex, Europe's only continental saltwater lake park, is the local pride: opened in 2003 as compensation for the lost old town, with brine baths, beaches, and waterslides recreating a Mediterranean atmosphere in landlocked Bosnia. Visit the Bosnian Cultural Center, the Mihatovića archaeological site (with its 6,000-year-old salt-related neolithic finds), and the Memorial Center honoring the 71 young people killed by Bosnian Serb shelling on May 25, 1995. Sample Bosnian ćevapi (grilled meat fingers) and burek pastries. Take a coffee in the central Soli square.
When to avoid
Tuzla has heavy industrial pollution from coal-fired power plants, air quality dips badly in winter when temperature inversions trap haze. Check AQI before outdoor activity. Subsidence from old salt mining still affects some buildings. The famous medieval old town is largely gone. Bosnia uses the convertible mark (BAM) but euros are widely accepted at small premium. ATMs work for cards. Many shops and restaurants close on Sundays.
