Why visit
Tyre's two main archaeological sites are extraordinary: the Al-Bass site contains a vast Roman necropolis and one of the world's largest Roman hippodromes (a 480m-long chariot racing arena), while the Al-Mina site preserves Roman streets, public baths, and a striking marble colonnade by the sea. The fishing harbor with its colorful boats, the small souk, and the long Mediterranean beaches at Tyre Coast Nature Reserve are highlights. Sample Lebanese seafood mezze and the local Tyrian sweets. The 13th-century Crusader cathedral ruins blend with Roman pillars.
When to avoid
Tyre sits in southern Lebanon, most Western governments advise against travel to areas south of the Litani River due to Israeli to Hezbollah conflict, with active hostilities since October 2023 causing significant damage. Check current advisories hour-by-hour. The area has periodic Israeli air strikes and active UN peacekeeper presence. If conditions allow, visit only with experienced local fixers, register with your embassy, and have evacuation plans. Dress modestly. Don't photograph Hezbollah, military, or political installations.
