Why visit
Walk the restored 17th-century Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (one of Siberia's oldest stone buildings), the Holy Trinity Monastery, and the elegant central square. The Tyumen Embankment along the Tura River is a multi-tiered modern promenade unique in Russia. The hot springs around Tyumen, warm geothermal waters in the middle of Siberia, are a unique experience, especially in winter when steam rises against snowy landscapes. Tyumen Drama theater is one of Russia's largest. Sample Siberian dumplings (pelmeni), pickles, and stroganina (frozen raw fish slices).
When to avoid
Russia is currently subject to extensive sanctions and travel advisories from Western governments, financial transactions, flights, and consular support are limited. Most Western credit cards do not work in Russia. The military and political situation remains tense. If you do go, register with your embassy, never photograph government/military, and avoid all political demonstrations. Winters are brutally cold (lows below -25°C). LGBT travelers face legal and social risks under recent laws.
