Why visit
The Taehwa River bamboo park (a vast grove restored from industrial wasteland), Ulsan Grand Park, and the Ulsan Bridge Observatory offer surprising urban green space. The Bangudae Petroglyphs (a Bronze Age UNESCO Tentative site) feature some of the world's oldest depictions of whale hunting carved into riverside rocks. The Daewangam coastal park has dramatic black volcanic cliffs and the Wangbaengam (King's Rock). Take a tour of the Hyundai shipyard or auto plant if you can arrange it. Sample whale meat (controversial but historically central here), grilled sea eel, and Korean BBQ.
When to avoid
Ulsan's air quality varies with industrial output and wind direction, sensitive travelers should check AQI. Summer (June to August) is hot and very humid (highs near 30°C, with typhoons possible August to October). The city is large and spread-out. Rent a car or use the extensive bus network. Tap water is technically safe but most Koreans use filtered or bottled. Whaling history is contested, visiting the Whale Museum can be uncomfortable for some.
